In Memory of Brian Ratcliffe

It is with sadness that we learned the news of the passing of Brian Ratcliffe in late April. Brian was an esteemed alumnus, a valued member of the Board and a dedicated donor. We remember and honour his remarkable life and his unwavering commitment, generosity and dedication which profoundly impacted the lives of many within our school.

Brian Ratcliffe's legacy and support date back to 1976 when he selflessly contributed as a generous donor towards the acquisition of the Buxton Home property, now known as the Eden Road Campus. Driven by his belief in the school's mission and his passion for education, he extended a helping hand when it was most needed. The ripple effect of his contribution resonates up to this day, and we remain forever grateful for his invaluable support.

Brian's association with WPPS spanned numerous years, during which he exemplified the true spirit of a dedicated student. As a senior boy in Grade 8 back in 1953, he was an active sportsman and played in both 1st X1 and 1st XV. His achievements in swimming were outstanding as he captained the team and emerged victorious in the inaugural four-length freestyle race. Brian's excellence extended to diving, where he secured first place.

In 1977, Brian's deep-rooted connection to WPPS led him to join the school's board, where he dedicated himself to serving for 15 years. His leadership and insights played a vital role in shaping the trajectory of the school, ensuring a nurturing environment for generations of students to come.

In addition to his numerous contributions, Brian's philanthropic spirit shone brightly through his donation of the Ratcliffe Shield in 1976. This esteemed award, bestowed upon the house with the highest points in inter-house competitions, stands as a testament to Brian's commitment to fostering healthy competition, camaraderie, and a sense of belonging within the WPPS community.

We are grateful for the profound impact he made on WPPS. His unwavering support, dedication, and generosity will continue to inspire us as we carry his legacy forward.

We're open to having a guest speaker, but we're also happy to simply connect and catch up without any formal presentations.

🌟 In Memory of Simon Cooper 🌟

It is with deep sorrow that we commemorate the life and legacy of Simon Cooper, a distinguished member of our WPPS community. As a highly esteemed WPPS alumnus, past parent, and former Chairman of the Board of Governors, Simon's profound impact on our institution will always be cherished.

During his time as a student at WPPS, Simon exemplified dedication and leadership. As a Boarder Prefect, he played an integral role in shaping our school community. His exceptional contributions were recognized with the prestigious Mrs. Stansbury Prize, a testament to his courtesy, thoughtfulness, general helpfulness, respect, and integrity.

Simon held fond memories of his days at Western Province Preparatory School, where he embarked on adventurous midnight feasts at the cricket nets and savoured the delights of condensed milk and sardines. His unwavering commitment extended to attending church on Sunday mornings, while the afternoons often saw lively pinecone fights at Monterey Prep School.

From 1984 to 2008, Simon served our institution diligently as a member of the Board of Governors. His exceptional leadership and dedication led him to assume the position of Chairman from 2002 to 2008. Throughout his tenure, Simon championed transparency and fostered open communication within the board, resulting in the implementation of a new constitution and an improved governance structure.

Simon's remarkable generosity further enhanced our school's facilities and paved the way for future endeavours. The SR Cooper Board Room stands as a testament to his gracious contributions, providing a space for important meetings and discussions. In 2014, his support extended to the Centenary Fund, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the long-term success and development of WPPS.

Today, we remember Simon Cooper for his outstanding contributions and unwavering dedication to our beloved institution.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family during this difficult time. May Simon rest in peace.

The Wetpups boys from the Bishops Matric Class of 1973 recently had a remarkable reunion. We are thrilled to share a snapshot from their gathering, featuring five WPPS 1969 leavers who began their journey together back in 1962.

We're thrilled to share some amazing updates from Lowell Jooste, the owner of LJ Crafted Wines! Many of you know that Lowell's family once owned the renowned Klein Constantia wine estate, which has been hosting Wetpups' annual cross country run for over 50 incredible years. We owe a huge thank you to the Jooste family for their support!

Now, Lowell and his team are making waves in the wine industry all the way from Napa Valley, Northern California to La Jolla, San Diego. They've developed a revolutionary approach to wine production. Here's the scoop: when their wines are perfectly aged, they ship the full barrels down to our beautiful town. And guess what? They serve the wine straight from the barrel, either by the glass or in reusable bottles, using their patented equipment.

Why is this so exciting? Well, it turns out that the traditional single-use wine bottle contributes to about half of the wine industry's carbon footprint. By offering their exquisite wines in reusable bottles, Lowell and LJ Crafted Wines are paving the way for a more sustainable future in winery tasting rooms. Isn't that incredible?
